NICOLE PEREZ

Luis Haseth

French latin sound with a crazy salsa club twist from the Latino king. From Paris to Cali, from salsa to reggeaton, Luis Haseth is giving us all his love of music. Heat and Latin spirit are melting with afro-Caribbean rhythm. Esclavo Moderno is full of Latin lyrics and Latin culture and from real life in South America.

It’s a hymn about tolerance and sharing. Luis invites us to go into a new musical world. Luis Haseth, a young Columbian salsero (arrived in France aged 17) shared the scene with the greatest Latin artists.

He began with Yuri Buenaventura, then became a member of bands as famous as the Paris Latin salsa, Raul Paz, Orlando Poléo, El barrio, and learned how to be a complete artist. He’s regrouping in Esclavo moderno, with the richness of his experience and history; he has managed to create his own unique style.
Luis Haseth’s music is an expression of his outlook on actual society.

Live salsa is an engaging music about social, political, and economical realities lived by all people around the world. An explosive and revolted salsa, inspired by his childhood and the treatment received by black people in his city: Buenaventura. Inspired by his life and his father’s experience, Luis’ strong and protesting lyrics express, before all, a message of hope.

Esclavo Moderno was made by traditional Colombian musicians, with the colour and the particular sound of bands Grupo Niche and Guayacan for the rhythmic parts. You can feel the friendship between Luis Haseth and his group when you hear the album, but much more on stage. Luis gives a new feel to Latin music led by a hot rhythm section and strong horns!

MAKAiA

Philippe Makaïa, tambour battant

Faithful towards the ancestral tradition Sitting on his Ka drum, Philippe Makaïa is gifted with an exceptional sense of rhythm and improvisation. He belongs to those, whom, by their intimate knowledge of the Gwoka music, can lighten your daily burden. His music tugs your body and soul.

He remains faithful to the Gwoka, although he mixes tradition and modernity. This complete art invented at the Guadeloupean sugar cane and coffee plantations by the slaves dragged out of Africa.

Philippe Makaïa didn’t choose the drum, it was literally imposed to him. In the 70th, at his fourteen’s, he could be seen at Morne-à-l’Eau,(his place of birth) beating the seven fundamental rhythms of the Gwoka on a Ka, for hours and hours.

During his youth, he met, played and sang with masters such as: Lambert Milon, Robert Loyson, Gérard Pommer, Marceau, Linlin and, in particular, Vélo, who he accompanied several years at Point-à-Pitre. With others of his age, he created the group Gwo Siwo, with who he makes the album “Ka Fraternité” while looking for new sound exploring the deepest mysteries of the Gwoka that they recompose according to their imagination.

Thierno Koite

Thierno is a saxophonist with a career stretching well over three decades – half of that time with Youssou Ndour’s band ‘Le Super Etoile de Dakar’. Their many hits include ‘7 seconds’, the well known duet with Neneh Cherry.During that period Thierno also joined the James Brown Senegalese tour and jammed with Maceo Parker.

He went on recording two albums with another great Senelgalese artist: Cheikh Lo. His hits compromise of ‘Ne la Thiasse’ and ‘Bambay Guedj’ on which Thierno plays a duet with saxophonist Pewee Elis.At the dawn of the new Millenium, Thierno decided to give the world a brand new insight into Senegalese music. For this, he gathered musicians and artists from every part of Senegal and formed a new band ‘Toxoro’.

As well as their musical experience (some have played with Manu Dibango, Cesaria Evora, Toure Kounda…) each of these artists put his own ethnic style into the album. As a result, it is the first time ever that an album features all the different Senegalese musical styles along with a balanced mix of traditional and contemporary songs. It is not surprising, therefore, that Thierno was nominated at the World Music Awards, in London in February 2002, for his part in the Orchestra Baobab. The Orchestra Baobab went on to win two World Music Awards in March 2003: the Africa category and the critics’ award for the album of the year.

This is a live studio performance that will take you on a journey through Senegal, starting with the name of the album ‘Teranga’, which means ‘Welcome’.

Gregory Isaacs

Gregory ‘The Cool Ruler’ Isaacs is probably the most famous reggae artist alive today. It was in 1973, when he set up his own record label ‘African Museum’ with fellow singer Errol Dunkley, that he released ‘My Only Lover’, which was an immediate success.

Between 1973 and 1976 Isaacs released more material than most artists do in a lifetime and nearly all of these works became classics. He soon became too big a talent to ignore and in 1978 joined the Virgin ‘Frontline’ label, where he released two more distinctive albums, namely the brilliant ‘Cool Ruler’ and ‘Soon Forward’.

After his departure from Virgin, circa 1980, Isaacs cut several tracks with Sly & Robbie for their ‘Taxi’ label. It was around this time that Island Records signed the star and recorded some of his biggest hits to date. In his long and distinguished career, Gregory has worked with every great producer and fellow artist. ‘The Cool Ruler’ he remains.

Slic One

Debut album from U.S. rapper Slic One beautifully produced by OD Hunte. Sean or ‘Jyawn’ as he’s known to his friends has delivered a heavy debut album, which separates itself from the pack with it’s sticky hooks, musical diversity and (unheard of in this day and age of hip hop) lack of samples on the album.

The hit single “ Private Gansta” however borrows famously from the Tina Turner classic “ Private Dancer” written by Dire Strait’s Mark Knopfler. But before you dismiss Slic One as another wannabe G you need to listen to the tales of finding love after a show “Raindropz”, warnings to hustlers “Wake Up Call” and of the dream-story of figuring a way to make ends on the Jodeciesq “Black Out”.

The track 'Crook Dancin' was this year commissioned by EA Sports game 'Fight Night Round 3' at ringside with the likes of Obie Trice & Akon.

Born to Nigerian parents, Slic One grew up in the US. Mr Bello expected much from his son and perhaps it was all these pressures that caused Slic to drop out of High School and leave the family home at an early age. Slic touched on many states and cities, staying with friends and relatives and eventually found his feet in New York. Although Slic missed his home life and listening to his mother’s James Brown, the late Fela Kuti and many 60s and 70s records, Slic was on his way to becoming self-made. But things switched dramatically one night when one of Slic’s closest friends was gunned down.

Slic hints of these and other events all though the 14-track album “My Mind State”. In the opening skit “Ironic” Slic speaks on how he used to live versus how his aspiring rapper peers were living and how it’s now flipped. Now a full time rapper, Slic recorded a mix tape album with Kapoo (who features on “From The Start” with JSteel.

Unfortunately the mixtape never came out but Slic’s luck was about to change as by chance he walked into the studio of Producer/ writer/remixer/engineer OD Hunte who was looking for an Urban act to launch his Southern Cuba
Records label in joint venture with Christian Jean-Francois’ of JFC Records. The album “My Mind State” is a first glimpse into the fascinating, sometimes dark life of Slic One.

During his time at Soul Town Records he had “Smash Hits” such as, “Summer Time” “Stay” and “Better Love”. Everis is a well-respected vocal coach and arranger in the music industry and has worked along side artists such as The Beat Masters, M Beat, Nazlyn, D-Influence, The Jones Girls, Aswad, Soul II Soul, Benz and Rozalla and sang on the Carl Cox track “Planet of love”.

This debut album is in a class of its own, taking the listener on a musical journey from blissful dubbed-out soulful grooves to more cinematic scores.

Having met through mutual friends in their native Hornchurch, Jointventure’s Mat Hoxby and Mark Crooks found common ground with their interests and musical backgrounds (both having been reared on a stable diet of Reggae and Ska), it was only a matter of time before they ventured into the studio.

Their first joint project was the cult underground six-piece band Sound Cartel – fusing electronic funk and punk with a touch of psychedelia or to quote Mark’s “skunkdupgangsterpunkfunk”. Eventually the members of the band started to drift; yet Mat & Mark decided to continue as a duo and Jointventure was born.

This debut album ‘Headshop’ is in a class of its own, taking the listener on a musical journey from blissful dubbed-out soulful grooves to more cinematic scores. The name ‘Headshop’ was inspired by the 1960’s term ‘heads’ which was used to describe people who shared similar
recreational activities and also from “these mad headshops in Amsterdam that display an amazing array of goodies, everything from crisps to crack pipes.

Things you’ve never seen before and things that you can’t do without, so we thought it would be a great name for the album as it isn’t just one style of music – it’s an array of Joint venture’s musical influences and inspirations”. The Dam theme even made its way into the music itself from a genuine Customs Officer who attempted to bust Mat on his way back to the UK, “You’re not under arrest and you are free to leave at any time!” Let that be a warning to you!
